Consumer Unit
When Consumer Unit Replacment Essential
A new consumer unit improves the safety in your home and protects you and your family. Are you having new lighting installed, more sockets or a shower? Then this may mean you need to upgrade your consumer unit to allow for the work to happen. It is standard practice to have a new consumer unit installed when you have a new kitchen fitted. Or when you are having an electric shower installed. These new installations incorporate all the circuits in your home. And often leaves little space to add more circuits for any future electrical work.
What is an Residual Current Device?
The RCD (Residual Current Device) detects the integrity of the circuit. It will detect any damage to a cable, or water damage, or a faulty appliance. The RCDs protect from electric shocks, or at the very least, injury from electric shock.
When is an RCD required?
Requirements from 17th edition regulations say there should be RCD protection for sockets. This also includes the electrics in your bathroom or shower room. Along with circuits intended to supply mobile equipment outdoors. And cables buried in walls. This means that every circuit in your home should be RCD protected.
What is a consumer unit used for
The consumer unit is the updated term of a fuse box. A consumer unit is the main control center for a home’s electrical supply. It consists of the following components:
- A Main Switch to turn off the power to your home.
- An MCB for each circuit which will switches itself off when it detects that a circuit overload. When the fault has cleared, you witch it back on. MCBs (miniature circuit breakers) are reliable and safe.
